Amped 4-A-Cure, Inc. Partners with Presbyterian Cancer Center and Chef Jay Jones on New Program: “An Apple A-Day” Program Promotes Healthier Living through Nutrition

Amped 4-A-Cure, Inc. (A4AC) announces its latest program today, “An Apple A-Day.” A4AC has partnered with culinary genius Chef Jay Jones (Food Network, Chateau Noir) oncology nutrition specialist Michelle Ray from Presbyterian Cancer Center to bring the “An Apple A-Day” program to life.

“An Apple A-Day” is focused on delivering important information to the community on how to use nutrition as a form of cancer prevention in a manner that is not only entertaining and easy to understand but also very practical. The goal of the program is to educate the three groups that define our population in reference to cancer health. It aims to provide (1)CANCER PATIENTS and their caretakers with nutritional information to help strengthen their bodies to endure the treatments, assist (2)CANCER SURVIVORS in making the right nutritional choices to ensure their best possible health and offer the information for the rest of the population that are considered (3)AT RISK the tools needed to remain cancer free.

Chef Jay invites the public to join him weekly as he develops easy to prepare dishes using key ingredients chosen and explained by his co-host, Michelle Ray, for their powerful cancer fighting properties. This “Regis & Kelly” duo of nutrition will introduce and prepare these power packed delicious recipes in a very fun and informative package. The masses will be able to receive the information via a daily email blast, AmpedNation Magazine column and on the Amped 4-A-Cure Android application. Future activities include a television/web broadcast as well as complimentary recipe cards soon to be available at a grocery store near you.

Michelle is an Oncology Nutrition Specialist for the Presbyterian Cancer Center in Charlotte, NC. In addition to promoting the prevention of cancer in the community through education and early detection, Michelle works closely with cancer survivors before, during and after treatment at Presbyterian Cancer Rehab & Wellness. Here, Michelle assists survivors with symptom management and weight management throughout their journey. Various oncology physician practices in the Charlotte area affiliated with Presbyterian Hospital refer their survivors to work with her. Michelle closely analyzes each person’s nutritional intake and provides recommendations to assist them through their survivorship. Michelle teaches them how to make appropriate food choices to support their nutritional needs and to reduce their risk of a recurrence. Michelle’s experience working with cancer survivors is rewarding to her! Working with survivors certainly keeps her life in perspective every day. She feels touched by every survivor she meets and truly blessed for being able to help them in their survivorship journey. Michelle’s commitment to working with survivors is to help them improve their overall quality of life through nutrition and wellness.

The Amped Music Series presents Hell Bent & Whiskey-Bound. This Outlaw Country/Americana-themed fundraiser show will take place on Saturday September 9, 2011 at The Chop Shop in NoDa at 8:30PM. The Amped Music Series is one of the fundraiser initiatives Amped 4-A-Cure, Inc. established to help us fund ongoing programs and donate towards cancer research. Amped 4-A-Cure, Inc. is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization and dedicated to raising funds and awareness for cancer research through music.

We invite you all to come out and support Amped 4-A-Cure, Inc and our fight against cancer as well as local/regional talent in the Carolinas. The doors open at 8PM and the first artist goes up at 9PM. There is a $10 donation at the door. All proceeds benefit Amped 4-A-Cure, Inc. and cancer research. For this installment of The Amped Music Series: Hell Bent & Whiskey-Bound we have an incredible line up of musicians as follows:

Jim "Guitar" Garrett
Jim has been performing music for over 46 years. He has a diverse background by playing in various country, rock, hard rock, and bluegrass bands, as well as studio work. He is an accomplished musician as he plays lead and acoustic guitar, fiddle, 5-string banjo, lead and backup vocals.

Jud Block
Jud grew up in Texas listening to the siren songs of Waylon, Townes, Billy Joe, Kris, and the Scottish poetry of Stuart Adamson. He learned to play bass and lurked around the punk rock scene for a while. In 2001 Jud moved to Charlotte, NC where he formed and led Cattletruck for about six years. In 2009, he released his first solo CD.

Bill Noonan
Bill is best known in indie music as leader & songwriter of the Rank Outsiders, Charlotte NC-based roots-rock pioneers. Now with the release of his second post-Ranks CD, The Man That I Can't Be, Noonan fully asserts himself as a front man, realizing the full range of his vision as a songwriter, vocalist, and musician.

David Childers
Burly North Carolinian David Childers is an acclaimed Americana artist who writes tough, literary tunes informed by heartland rock, country music, folk music, small towns, and lonesome highways. He also draws passionate inspiration and imagery from the Bible. 1999's Hard Time County and 2001's A Good Way to Die featured musical contributions (and some co-production) from noted Nashville artist Duane Jarvis.

The Turnstiles
The five original members of The Turnstiles were brought together in 2003 by a shared love for good music, and a desire to make some of their own. The music, in this case, cuts a swathe of territory ranging from the Replacements to Merle Haggard, by way of roots-rock and country greats like Neil Young, Bruce Springsteen, Johnny Cash and The Band.

THE CHOP SHOP
The Chop Shop is a new bar/venue/ event center/haven for artist, musicians, mechanics, martial artists, lovers, and any and all other creative types or those who like to be around creative types. Located 1 block off of N. Davidson on 35th St in the NoDa art district it is a fun and creative environment built from re-purposed auto parts, electrical panels, old factory machinery and all types of odd and creative pieces: all in an old textile recycling plant. There is also an inside window in to their workshop where you might catch an artist or mechanic at work or possibly a dancer or creative side piece for a performance or band.

6th Annual Family Care Fair -Get AMPED!

Presbyterian Hospital Huntersville and the Town of Huntersville are excited to host the 6th Annual Family Care Fair . The fair will be held on Saturday, May 7, 2011 from 10 a.m. – 1 p.m. at the Presbyterian Hospital Huntersville campus. It is free for everyone so come join in on the fun!

This event will provide families with health and safety information and resources. There will be a valuable hands-on approach to learning with numerous health, fitness and prevention activities. Other activities include a moon bounce, pony rides, giveaways and food/refreshments.

The Huntersville Market will also be on site for its Opening Day of the market. The market hours will be 7am-1pm. Products being sold at the Huntersville Market include fresh produce, meats, cheeses, baked goods, jewelry, hand crafted items, flowers and more!

We had an incredible time at Levine Children's Hospital for the 2nd installment of the "Music That Heals" Concert Series. For this quarter's concert, we invited the students from School of Rock Charlotte to perform. The kids were absolutely amazing. Special thanks to School of Rock for making this possible, and of course to Levine Children's Hospital for allowing us to "Get AMPED" right in the hospital lobby. It was a beautiful afternoon of music---all to benefit the patients at Levine Children's Hospital. We are so proud to be a part of this initiative.

Amped 4-A-Cure, Inc. Enters Pepsi Refresh Project For A Chance to Win A $250,000 Grant To Fund The Briana Watts Scholarship Program for Oncology Students

CHARLOTTE N.C. (January 4, 2011) – Amped 4-A-Cure, Inc. (A4AC) started off the new year with an exciting announcement—Amped 4-A-Cure, Inc.’s Briana Watts Scholarship Fund has been selected to compete in the Pepsi Refresh Project for a grant of $250,000. Online and text voting began on Monday January 3 and will continue through January 31. The Pepsi Refresh Project awards grant money to individuals, businesses and nonprofit organizations with innovative ideas to better the community. Only 1000 applications are accepted each month, and winners are based on the number of votes received.

The Briana Watts Scholarship Fund is named after Briana Watts who lost her battle with Osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer, on Feb. 11, 2010 at the tender age of fifteen. This scholarship fund will provide financial support to students fighting the war on cancer who choose Oncology as their field of study. Amped 4-A-Cure, Inc. plans to award ten deserving students each with a $20,000 Scholarship for their dedication to cancer patient care and research in finding a cure. One of the scholarships will always be awarded to a resident of North Carolina, Briana's home state. We want to encourage students to specialize in cancer research to help rid the world of this disease once and for all. Winning the $250,000 grant will allow A4AC to assist individuals who are dedicating their lives to helping those in need both now and for generations to come.

In an effort to support those who generate innovative, optimistic ideas, the Pepsi Refresh Project awarded more than $20 million in 2010 to move communities forward. Using music to encourage, heal and inspire

CHARLOTTE N.C. (December 20, 2010) – Amped 4-A-Cure, Inc (A4AC) announced today its new “Music That Heals” program scheduled to kick off on Thursday December 23 with a private Christmas mini-concert at Levine Children’s Hospital from 2 p.m. until 3 p.m. for patients, hospital staff and special invited guests.

Although A4AC’s primary mission is to support cancer research through music, the organization’s purpose extends beyond simply raising funds for the research; it is also about providing solace and comfort with music, the universal language that links all humanity. The Music That Heals program introduces several initiatives to use the soothing power of music to make a difference of all those affected by the disease providing a sense of hope, comfort and encouragement. The first initiative under the auspices of Music That Heals is “Music Therapy” where Amped 4-A-Cure, Inc. will provide healthcare facilities with music players pre-loaded with popular music in a variety of genres that can be "checked-out" by patients to enjoy while undergoing their chemotherapy treatment or in the instance they need a musical escape. A4AC's first site is Levine Children's Hospital in Charlotte, NC. Age-appropriate music will be loaded to each player for the children to enjoy while being treated. Best Buy has partnered with Amped 4-A-Cure, Inc. and generously sponsored the first set of music players for the children.

To celebrate the launch of Music That Heals, A4AC has organized a mini-concert for the enjoyment of the patients at Levine Children’s Hospital. In the spirit of the season, several local musical acts (including a performance by smooth jazz band 5^th and York), will perform Christmas songs to encourage holiday cheer. At the end of the performance, representatives from Amped 4-A-Cure, Inc will officially present Levine Children’s Hospital with the music players. This will be the first in a series of Music That Heals concerts to be held quarterly at the hospital. Getting 'Amped' About Broccoli

If you’re like me, you can remember your mom encouraging you to eat all your vegetables, especially the broccoli. Who would have thought those broccoli florets could one day save your life?

In a recent Success Magazine article titled, “Live Longer By Slowing Down”, Dr. Oz and Dr. Roizen explain the “ultimate longevity foods”. And guess what they characterize as a “potent cancer fighter”? You got it, broccoli! Here’s a brief excerpt from the article:

“Scientists have seen compounds in this vegetable stop ovarian, colon, breast and prostate cancer from spreading (in a lab, and hopefully also in your body) by turning on your GSTM1 gene. That gene makes a protein that binds to and causes prostate, colon and breast cancer cells to commit suicide. It also cuts your risk of laryngeal cancer and inhibits other cancers.”

Now, I would say the opportunity to beat cancer is well worth eating a lot of broccoli. Don’t you agree?

Researchers Develop Promising Breast Cancer Vaccine

Scientists have made a discovery they say could lead to a vaccine to prevent and cure breast cancer, a common and deadly disease that afflicts millions of women around the world.

The experimental vaccine developed by researchers at Cleveland Clinic's Lerner Institute in Ohio was 100 percent effective in preventing breast cancer in a group of mice specially bred to develop the disease. The vaccine, which has been in the works for the past eight years, also stopped the growth of existing tumors.

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women worldwide, and there are approximately a half million new cases reported each year. The disease is notoriously hard to cure. It often recurs within 10 years, despite treatments thought to be effective at the time of diagnosis.

Lead researcher Vincent Tuohy says the experimental vaccine works by stimulating the immune system to protect the body against the development of breast cancer. Until now, the major hurdle for researchers working on cancer vaccines has been finding ways to avoid setting off auto-immune responses in cancer patients. Autoimmunity occurs when the body's immune system mistakenly attacks healthy tissue or organ systems.

The resulting inflammation can trigger an even more aggressive form of breast cancer. But vaccine researchers have found a way to target proteins that are only present in breast tumors but not in healthy breast tissue, according to Tuohy.

Tuohy says the vaccine kept the specially-bred, breast cancer-prone lab mice completely tumor-free.

"We found the first way of creating a self-vaccine that can be used prophylactically, in a preventive manner, to protect us against a disease before we get it just like polio and measles," said Vincent Tuohy.

Experts say a woman has a 12 percent risk of being diagnosed with breast cancer over her lifetime. But according to the US National Cancer Institute, women who have inherited two abnormal genes, called BRCA (BROCK-AH) 1 and BRCA (BROCK-AH) 2, have a much higher, 60 percent risk of developing breast cancer by age 90.

Provenge, a New Prostate Cancer Vaccine, Will Soon Be Available at UCSF

The cancer vaccine sipuleucel-T — now commercially branded as Provenge — will soon be available at a select group of medical centers nationwide, including UCSF.

Provenge is a newly-approved, life-extending prostate cancer treatment for men with advanced disease. Medical centers that helped to carry out the clinical trials leading to approval by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) will be the first to offer Provenge in standard practice. Within a few weeks, UCSF cancer specialists will become the first and only site in Northern California to make the treatment available to patients who are not participating in clinical trials.

At the end of April, Provenge became the first cancer treatment vaccine to be approved by the FDA. Compared to chemotherapy, Provenge generally causes fewer and milder side effects.

UCSF medical researcher Eric Small, MD, has been involved in the development of the treatment. He conducted the first studies in patients and has remained involved through the completion of advanced phase III clinical trials.

Small, a medical oncologist and the director of clinical sciences for the UCSF Helen Diller Family Comprehensive Cancer Center, is optimistic about the possibility that Provenge and other immunotherapies now in clinical trials will prove effective alone or in combination with other drugs against all stages of prostate cancer.

“The stimulation of the immune system to attack cancer has been an elusive goal. The data that led to the FDA approval of Provenge is an important proof-of-concept.”

Production of Provenge Ramps Up

Provenge is expected to be in short supply for a year or two. Dendreon, the Seattle-based company that developed Provenge, is still ramping up its manufacturing capability. The company announced that treatment would initially become available at about 50 sites nationwide.

The FDA approved the use of Provenge to treat only certain men with prostate cancer. A man must have cancer that has spread to other tissues. He must be experiencing no symptoms, or only minor symptoms. He must be taking hormonal therapy to block the cancer-stimulating effects of testosterone. In addition, his PSA score must be rising over time, despite hormonal therapy. A rising PSA score is an indication that hormonal treatment may no longer be effective.

Provenge is made from a patient’s own immune cells. Certain immune cells are removed from the patient and trained to target a protein called PAP. PAP is found primarily on prostate tumor cells and on normal prostate cells. The patient receives three infusions of these immune cells, two weeks apart.

Compared to untargeted immune cells, Provenge extended patient survival by an average of four months in phase III clinical trials. Three times as many men treated with Provenge survived three years or more. Provenge does not appear to shrink tumors significantly. Nor does treatment cause a drop in PSA levels.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Amped 4-A-Cure, Inc. is gearing up for a phenomenal year of programs and official A4AC events to promote education, awareness and most importantly, provide financial support for cancer research initiatives. Amped 4-A-Cure, Inc is proud to present the following new programs:

· Amped in the Kitchen: a weekly culinary program that provides nutritional facts and healthy recipes both for those diagnosed with cancer and their caregivers, for foods and meals that will support and strengthen the immune system as those patients undergo treatments.

· Amped Lessons: a program where A4AC will provide weekly music lessons to individuals diagnosed with cancer.

· Amped Junior Advocates/Amped U: program to increase awareness and participation about Amped 4-A-Cure, Inc.'s mission to support cancer research among middle and high school students as well as college students, beginning in the Southeast region of the United States.

Additionally, A4AC is excited for an expansive and exciting series of 2010 events:

· Amped Runway: a major show using music and fashion as a way to deliver a massive awareness campaign about cancer research. This show would serve as one of the larger fundraisers for the year.

· Amped Cooks: a culinary arts presentation set to music featuring celebrity chefs and community leaders. This event will also include a segment on healthy living and eating habits to prevent cancer as well as for those battling the disease.

· Amped On The Sea: this event will take place on a cruise ship and will serve as a "floating" music conference for all music genres. This will include concerts and workshops as well as presentations on cancer research advancements. Amped On The Sea will partner with a breast cancer organization and will specifically benefit breast cancer research activities and programs.

· Amped Rock & Bowl: abowling tournament between the major record labels with the inaugural tournament being held in Atlanta, GA. This will be an annual event.

Movie Premiere Set for Documentary Highlighting Charlotte's Thriving Hip Hop Scene

Atlanta, GA – Invisible Man Media has announced plans to premiere "Crown Royalty: The History of Charlotte Hip-Hop" February 26, 2010. The red carpet screening will be held in Charlotte during CIAA Weekend at the Actor's Theatre of Charlotte.

Written, directed and produced by Mehka, of Invisible Man Media, "Crown Royalty: The History of Charlotte Hip-Hop" is a complete documentary covering the often over-looked hip-hop scene in Charlotte, North Carolina. Featuring local artists, labels, landmarks and personalities, "Crown Royalty: The History of Charlotte Hip Hop" shines light on the music scene, the key players in its past, and a glimpse into its future. Although he isn't a native of The Queen City, Mehka hopes that viewers will come to know a vibrant music scene that he believes has been overlooked, like so many other smaller cities and towns. "Charlotte's hip hop scene is like so many other places that I've seen in my travels. They have their own style and celebrities, but have yet to break into the mainstream largely in part to its location and small town perception. I hope this documentary shines a spotlight not only Charlotte, North Carolina but all the "Charlottes" of the world," Mehka explains.

This invite only premiere (and reception) is the first of its kind to be held in Charlotte, and has already begun to generate a strong buzz within the music community. The documentary features involvement from the greats of the city's past and the best and brightest talents from its future. "Crown Royalty: The History of Charlotte Hip-Hop" includes interviews and performance footage scene heavyweights Diggie Die of Liquor House Records, Ike Turnah, Big Treal, Tiny T, Wolly Vinyl and Kam Moye, Royal-Tee, Maui, The Transfers, Sonny Rich, and more as they tell the tale of a city like so many others overlooked and overflowing with talent.

I'm A Survivor: Krys Ivory

Many adjectives come to mind when describing the amazingly talented songstress Krys Ivory, a Los Angeles native who's signed to Ryan Leslie's Next Selection Label. Inspirational, Gifted, and Survivor are just some of the incredible characteristics that make this beautiful songstress thrive in this competitive industry. Krys doesn't only possess a voice so powerful and full of soul that it sends shivers down your spine; she also has incredible song-writing abilities. She accredits her creative genes to her mother and father who dabbled with writing and music themselves. It's been said that in life it's often more than just reaching your destination that defines who you are, it's the obstacles and triumphs that make up the journey along the way that shape you into the person you become. This rings true in Krys' own life in many ways.

Krys, whose father is the pastor of a Southern Baptist church and her mother, a homeless ministry volunteer, was raised on a diet of gospel music. She grew up singing with All God's Children, a gospel group that toured the U.S., rubbing elbows with the likes of Barbara Streisand. Upon meeting Streisand, her words lead Krys to realize that a singing career was in fact possible. "I was 11 years old and here's this icon," Krys reveals. "That's what really gave me the hunger to be in the music industry. That was the turning point in my life."

It was that same hunger and passion to triumph that led Krys to develope
her vocal skills by performing anywhere she could. She would enter herself in talent shows at the Boys and Girls Club where her mother worked. Shortly after that she began singing for members of her father's homeless ministry. They would share their stories with her and she would in turn share her gift of song with them.

In 2007 Krys had two major life altering events occur. One was a triumph and the
other a devastating blow. After being introduced to Krys, Ryan Leslie immediately recognized that she had undeniable musical chemistry that ignited the minute she was placed behind a mic and he quickly signed her to the Next Selection Lifestyle Group label. He could see her potential to become an international pop star and later went on with her to record the well known song "Next 2 Ya" which spread like wildfire across the musical web sphere. However, just when Krys began to reap the benefits of her hard work and determination that were finally paying off, her world came to
crashing halt when she was diagnosed with Hodgkin's Lymphoma.

After enduring a year-long battle with the disease, Krys Ivory is now cancer-free and in remission. She sites God and music for her strength to overcome such a trying chapter of her life. "I had begun to have an emotional breakdown," she admits, "I was like, what's going to happen with my music? what's going to happen with my life?

Thankfully she no longer has to ask herself those questions. Now at the age of 22, there isn't a single restraint holding her back from taking her career goals and soaring. At her core is a spiritual vocalist who sings from the heart and the sound she produces is captivating. When you come across someone as passionate about music as Krys, it's evident because when she sings, it sounds as if it is pouring out from
her soul. Her label debut under Ryan Leslie's tutelage asks only one thing of her- make music without limitations. For Krys, there couldn't be a simpler task because of her conviction and her ability to cover a wide range of genres with ease. One of the most endearing traits of Krys is how humble she remains even though she is without a doubt the next big thing. "I love music,period... point blank."

More Than $2 Million In NIH Grants To Barrow Researchers For Nicotine Studies

Four scientists at Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph's
Hospital and Medical Center have been awarded more than $2.2 million from the
National Institutes of Health (NIH) to research the effects of nicotine and develop new tobacco-related drug therapies.

The grants will fund three separate research projects at the Phoenix-based
institute in the next several years. Ronald J. Lukas, PhD and Vice President of Research at Barrow, is one of the world's leading experts on nicotine and has spent much of his research career studying its impact. Lukas'research lab, shared by Paul Whiteaker, PhD, is the main recipient of the funding. The Barrow laboratories of Jie Wu, MD, PhD, and Yongchang Chang, MD, PhD, also will receive funding from the grants.

Lukas said these Barrow-led projects also will benefit a number of other researchers around the country who will receive collaborative NIH funding of more than $5 million for their participation in the studies.

The newly-funded Barrow studies range from understanding how nicotine may reduce depression, to how it creates addiction, to how nicotine addiction is related to http://www.medicalnewstoday.com/info/lung-cancer/what-is-lung-cancer.php> lung cancer.

"These studies have implications for nicotine dependence, tobacco
addition, lung cancer and mood disorders," said Lukas. "In total these NIH

Welcome to the February edition of the A4AC Newsletter. We are excited and "AMPED" about all the great things our team has been working on this past month. January was super busy for us-from planning events, implementing new programs and initiatives, to preparing for the launch of Amped Live. We have been going nonstop. At the end of the day we are happy to do it; after all, this is ultimately about finding a cure for cancer, and providing ongoing support for cancer research efforts across the nation and eventually the globe.

The Latin American Coalition invites you to journey through Brazil in an evening featuring traditional dancing; live musical performances of Samba, Bossa Nova, and Brazilian Beats; authentic foods; and arts and crafts.

The Brazilian Carnival is one of the best-known celebrations today, and many cities and regions worldwide celebrate with large, popular events. It’s time to celebrate Charlotte’s Brazilian community. A Night in Rio will feature live samba and traditional dancing by Movimentos de Samba. Carolina Latin Dance Company will perform an Afro-Brazilian tribal dance featuring children dancers. Free samba lessons will get the crowd moving. Demonstrations of capoeira, an Afro- Brazilian art form that combines martial arts, music and dance, will be demonstrated by Charlotte Capoeira Grupo. The globally-known hits of Antonio Carlos Jobim, Joao Gilberto, and Caetano Veloso will be interpreted by musician Reinaldo Brahm, while SoulBrazil will move the crowd with live samba music. New Look, Same Mission: To Support Cancer Research Through Music

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (January 4, 2010) — While most people were busy finding that perfect New Year’s Eve outfit or developing their new year’s resolutions, the Amped-4-A-Cure (A4AC) team was focused on taking their efforts to the next level for 2010. And the first step to achieving that goal is the re-launch the official Amped-4-A-Cure, Inc. website.

“The re-launch of the Amped 4-A-Cure website is a confirmation of growth, expansion and acceptance,” says Xavier Grier, A4AC‘s President and Chief Executive Officer. “We launched our first website June 1, 2009 and quickly outgrew the site due to an overwhelming response from the public and the amazing developments lead by the Amped 4-A-Cure leadership team.”

Now, when visitors click on http://www.amped4acure.org/, they are immediately drawn into the movement. The site commands total attention, while users navigate through all the interactive components. For instance, the “featured artist” section allows each visitor to listen conveniently to the newest music from Amped featured artists. After satisfying your musical curiosity, you can shift gears to the “In honor of” section. Here visitors will experience a more personal account of cancer from individuals, including A4AC team members who have lost loved ones from cancer. Hosted by Big Pat (Charlotte Bobcats Radio Personality) and Melinda Medina (Model/Media Personality), QCA will also honor the life of the late Nate Quick during the ceremony. Quick, who died in August of liver cancer, was a beloved member of the Charlotte entertainment industry and considered the “voice” of Power 98, where he worked as a radio personality for many years. As a tribute, the Queen City Awards will donate a portion of proceeds from this event to Amped 4-A-Cure (www.amped4acure.org), an organization headquartered in Charlotte that supports cancer research through music. This will truly make 2009 a very special year for the QCA. This year’s show is being produced by Talkofnc.com and CarolinaArtist.net.

NABFEME Charlotte Seeks Hot Female Artists for Talent Showcase

The Charlotte Network of The National Association of Black Female Executives in Music and Entertainment (NABFEME) will hold auditions for its next “Women Who Jam” concert on October 27, 2009 at PJ’s Coffee & Lounge from 7:30 p.m. until 9:30 p.m. NABFEME Charlotte is seeking the best and brightest female independent artists in the Greater Charlotte Metropolitan area to grace the stage.

“Women Who Jam” is one of NABFEME Charlotte’s signature events and serves to highlight female music artists in an entertaining and supportive atmosphere. Those interested in auditioning for the main show are asked to bring a photo, bio or press kit, and be prepared to sing a one to two- minute selection of their choosing a cappella. The actual “Women Who Jam” concert will occur on Thursday, November 12, 2009. The location will be announced at a later date.

In addition to providing a viable platform for the artists to showcase their talents, NABFEME Charlotte will be accepting donations for Amped 4-A-Cure, an initiative providing support to cancer research through the universal language of music. Can goods and other non perishable items will also be collected for those in need.

PJ’s Coffee & Lounge is located at 210 East Trade Street on the first floor of the EpiCentre in Uptown Charlotte. Admission is free and open to the public. The Mantras

Formed in 2003, this Greensboro, NC quintet, consisting of Keith Allen (vox/guitar) vox, Marcus Horth (vox, guitar) ; Brian Tyndall (bass, bkgrd vox), Brent Vaughn (percussion), and Justin Loew on drums, has been gaining an army of fans with their unique blend of rock, fusion, jazz, and funk, as well as their off the wall live shows. It is not uncommon for the band to not only traverse these genres in a single performance, but to do so in a single song. Reminiscent of the blistering energy found in early seventies recordings of Frank Zappa's touring band, the Mantras excel with their virtuosic playing and superior musicianship, all the while not losing sight of the overall arrangements and songs.

Moon Taxi is an explosive Rock band from Nashville, Tennessee. They have spent the past couple years touring relentlessly, honing their unique sound. They have played the 10,000 Lakes Festival in Minnesota, Moe's SummerCamp Festival, Birmingham's City Stages, the Terrapin Hill Harvest Festival and clubs from Texas to New York City. They have just released their highly anticipated new live album, Live Ride. Coming out on February 10th, the album was recorded live in Nashville and features 8 previously unreleased songs as well as favorites from their debut album Melodica. The first annual C.O.M. Festival…standing for Carolinas Original Music Festival, was a great success for a beautiful day at the beach. Originally supposed to be held at Hugh MacRea Park in Wilmington, NC the site location was changed a week prior to the event to OGDEN PARK in Wilmington, NC due to overwhelming enthusiasm and ticket sales.

The event was to focus on NC/SC ORIGINAL music…performed by 6 bands. Portions of the ticket sales will go to benefit AMPED 4 A Cure … supporting cancer research through music, which was a perfect blend for this event. The AMPED booth was a focal point for the event, with the bands/performers and concert goers alike making sure to stop in and say hello, and give us their stories of how cancer has affected them. There were 2 young men that were amazing through out the day….true volunteers who just wanted to hang out and help all day. Jameson and Cameron, our new friends and volunteers are only in 8th grade, but after putting on their newly acquired AMPED necklaces…they felt the need to do more…and were walking and working the crowd all afternoon with literature about A4AC as well as stickers for a dollar donation.

The bands were GREAT, if you ever have a chance to see any of them live….DO IT! The day started with the ROCKTASTIC sounds of the Wilmington band, Small Doses, whose music you can currently hear on www.amped4acure.org followed by great jam sounds of Greenshack. Daniel Parish kept us amped with his acoustical folk rock routine, before the main bands of the evening were brought on stage. Ten Toes Up from SC wrapped the growing crowd around their fingers, making it easy for the great sounds of Jonas see’s in Color to continue their musical trance over all the concert goers. Finally it was time for Parmalee..from Greenville NC. These guys brought the stage show and rock attitude that people tend to forget about. Amidst the fog machine smoke, the vivid light displays, and the AMAZING music flowing from the speakers all day long, came a message everyone seemed to hear LOUD and Clear…GET AMPED!

Already looking forward to the 2nd annual COM festival…and hopefully to have these and more bands even more AMPED by then.

The High Country Beer Festival expressed their support for Amped-4-A-Cure and have given us the space for promoting our cause in the upcoming festival. The HC Beerfest.

The High Country Beer Fest is on its second year celebrating great craft beer from around the region and the world. Come sample craft beers, club beers, great music and delicious food in the beautiful high country of North Carolina. Educational seminars will cover all aspects of beer, brewing, and pairing food and beer.

All proceeds to benefit the Hospitality House in Boone and the first non-profit, educational brewpub in the country on the campus of Appalachian State University! The Ivory Tower Brewery will be run and managed by ASU faculty and students. The program will include beer and brewing course offerings and a research component comprising renewable energy production (e.g. capturing clean carbon dioxide for biodiesel production) and the use of alternative energy to power the brewery.

40 Years of Peace and Love

On August 15, 1969, four entrepreneurs kicked off what became both the defining event for an entire generation as well as the start of a musical revolution. Forty years later, Charlotte’s Paul Green’s School of Rock organized a nod to the everlasting social harmony the Woodstock Music & Art Fair imprinted on so many.

Lawn chairs and towels, artists in their tents, tie dye, flowers, face paintings, and as expected, an overwhelming sense of peace and love prevailed during the event. Many of the attendees brought with them hippy bohemian dresses, mellowed-out behavior and “Flower Power” attitudes which lent to the overall success of the festival. Several attendees provided stories from their very own experiences during the original festival which were met cheers and applause by the crowd.

The young artists from the School of Rock, along with 10 local bands, blew the audience away with their renditions of Woodstock classics by bands such as CCR, Janis Joplin and Jimi Hendrix. One of the highlights of the day came when a young boy from the School of Rock masterfully played homage to Hendrix’s rendition of The Star Spangled Banner for which he received a thunderous standing ovation. During the middle of the afternoon the performers from DrumStrong delighted the crowd with an impromptu parade where anyone was welcome to participate.

Part music fair, part art fair and part charity showcase, local artists proudly displayed their work along with information about the many charitable organizations they represented. Festival-goers were presented with everything from handmade jewelry to drum lessons, and the opportunity to learn about and donate to various charities. Amped 4-A-Cure, as many others, was there to enjoy the festivities and promote Cancer research.

As the festivities rolled into the late afternoon and the crowd became more comfortable, pockets of dancers could be seen throughout the lawn. The sense of peace, love, and harmony had infected all by the time the sun began to set. When the festival came to a close, everyone left with a little “flower power” inside of them.

Utopia Soundstage presents the Battle of Bands Thursday nights at Utopia SoundStage, conveniently located in the heart of the University City, Charlotte NC. Utopia is looking for the best house band in Charlotte. Contestants will battle for a six-month contract, a cash prize of $500.00, an opportunity to play with a national recording artist and general bragging rights. The last battle and grand finale will be on July 23, 2009. The Crowd will determine who wins the $500 grand prize and paid six-month contract.

“Women Who Jam”

The Charlotte Network of The National Association of Black Female Executives in Music and Entertainment (NABFEME) presents “Women Who Jam” an exclusive concert series featuring independent female musical acts from across the Carolinas.
“Women Who Jam” is one of NABFEME Charlotte’s signature events and serves to highlight female music artists in an entertaining and supportive atmosphere. This year the “Women Who Jam” concert will be held June 24, 2009 at Utopia Soundstage in Charlotte’s University area.
To celebrate the essence of “Women Who Jam” NABFEME Charlotte will honor three women who truly jam—media personalities Chirl Girl, Consuella and Ife Moore. Celebrated Poet and Spoken Word Artist Bluz will serve as the evening’s host and Master of Ceremonies.

Not only will the concert provide a platform for these artists to showcase their talents, a portion of proceeds earned will go toward Amped 4-A-Cure, a new initiative providing support to cancer research through the universal language of music. NABFEME Charlotte has a strong tradition of supporting community based initiatives and charitable causes.

Media Professionals ‘band’ together to get “Amped 4-A-Cure”:
Supporting cancer research through music

(Charlotte, NC) Whether it is as close as a personal battle, losing a close relative or simply hearing that the elderly lady at your church was recently diagnosed, we have all been affected in one way or another by cancer. We have two choices: to continue to watch this epidemic grow and monopolize peoples’ lives or step up and do something about it. That is exactly what a motivated group of individuals who have all been particularly affected by the disease recently decided to do: come together to use their talents and resources to form a movement with the sole focus of cancer research. Hence, “Amped 4-A-Cure” was born.

What began in 2007 as an annual benefit concert to support the research activities of Hanover Medical Specialists, P.A.’s Oncology Division in Wilmington, NC quickly transpired into a full on movement, as one of the initial creators, Xavier Grier, having recently lost his father to cancer, imagined that this project could be turned into so much more. After sharing the idea with his business partners, Rocky Robinson and Jonnell Walker of |THE, llc., he then introduced the idea to JSW Media Group Principal Jameka Whitten and Dany Eason of DEPR Communications, all of whom have lost close loved ones to the battle and were immediately on board. With these 4, along with Xavier and the remaining original creators, Heath Harrison, Charlie Harrington and Ashley Rogers, the Amped 4-A-Cure team was set and ready to take flight.

Amped 4-A-Cure’s mission is simple: to raise funds to support cancer research through the universal language of music. Some of the ways planned to raise funds is through mini concerts to be held in cities nationwide; partnering with existing concert series, music inspired events, and select live music venues to make all of their events official “Amped 4-A-Cure” events to raise funds and awareness; a major concert in December featuring both major recording artists and independents as a finale for their 2009 Million Dollar Campaign; and sales of compilation CDs.

Donations and proceeds generated from fundraising efforts go towards Amped-4-A-Cure’s beneficiary, The American Association for Cancer Research, www.aacr.org.
